Geraldine Marie (Dunlap) Vandegrift

Gerri was the only child of the late Chester and Dorothy (Hauf) Dunlap. She was born in Lancaster City on May 6, 1933 and passed away quietly at home in Manheim Township on April 20, 2011. She lived in Lancaster City until 1941 when they moved to Manheim Twp. She graduated from Manheim Township High School in 1951 and Pratt Institute School of Art in Brooklyn, New York in 1955 with a BFA in Interior Design. Upon returning to Lancaster County she worked as a kitchen and bath designer at Frey and Sons Millwork and won a first prize for a complete kitchen design at the home show in Harrisburg. She designed the kitchen and Fellowship Hall at her church, St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Lancaster, where she married her husband, Donald Vandegrift on April 5, 1958. She was of the Christian faith. She is survived by husband, Donald; son, Brian and wife Kyki of Mountville; daughter, Alice and husband James Howard of Lancaster; and 2 grandsons, Parker and Hayden Howard.
- Although legally blind and requiring strong glasses, she enjoyed playing the piano, doing needlepoint and crocheting afghans for friends and family. She also made her own "search a word" puzzles. She loved cats, especially Whisper, who would sit upon her chest as she crocheted. In her earlier years she enjoyed camping with her family in their pop-up camper. Later, with her husband, they visited all 48 connected states. She took pride in the fact that she designed her house, and her dad (a contractor) built it and her husband paid for it, therefore a real family affair! Her greatest joy was being with her 2 Grandsons, Parker and Hayden. Gerri and Don recently celebrated their 53rd Wedding anniversary with family.
- As a memorial, Gerri expressed the desire that friends and family visit the Garden of the Five Senses in Lancaster County Central Park near Rock Ford. Please omit flowers. Contributions can be made to the Susquehanna Association for the Blind or the Diabetes Association. A memorial service is being planned.
