Chester Purnell, 89, of Grier City, son of the late James W. and Ella (Fritz) Purnell, went home to the Lord August 28, 2012.

Chet was a graduate of Mahanoy City High School, class of 1941, and retired carpenter of 47 years.

He was a member of Christ Church and served on the consistory over 50 years plus a past president and also granted the status of Elder Emeritus. He sang in the church choir, the Rush Township male chorus and the Patriots Christian Chorus.

Chet was superintendent, teacher and janitor at the Grier City Union Sunday School and a Rush Township supervisor.

He was an Army Veteran of WWII, serving in the 245th Engineer Combat Battalion earning sergeant rank who was awarded many medals including the Purple Heart.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 583.

Chet was a member of the Tamaqua Masonic Lodge and the Bloomsburg Blue Lodge.

He played baseball, softball, dart baseball and enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing.

Chet was married to the former Eleanor (Leitzel) Purnell; has two sons: Jim (wife Penny); and Randy (wife Donna); grandchildren Chad, Christy, Nick, Steven, and a great-grandchild Nathan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Eleanor, brothers Herbert and Lamar, and sister Edna.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm September 15 at Christ Church with the Rev. Janet Kline officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Chet's memory to the Grier City Union Sunday School in care of Edie Messerschmidt or Rev. Janet Kline, 21 Elm Ave., Barnesville, PA 18214.

Cremation arrangements are by Auer Memorial Home and Cremation Services Inc., Harrisburg.
