Frederick George Gutzat

Frederick George Gutzat passed away on February 3, 2013 at the Willow Valley Retirement Community where he had resided for the past 18 years. He was 89 years old.

Frederick grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey where he met and later married his high school sweetheart Dolores. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and active in numerous high school clubs and sports. He was a 1943 graduate of King's Point Academy in New York and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, making several around the world trips aboard the SS Alexander and the SS San Antonio.

He subsequently attended Newark College of Engineering, graduating in 1952 as a mechanical engineer. He was employed by Dupont and through his 33-year career, undertook a number of transfers, domestically to Delaware, Virginia, Tennessee, New York, Ohio and Texas, and internationally to the Netherlands and Iran.

Fred was adventurous and loved to travel, making the most of his years abroad in the war and while employed with Dupont. In retirement he and Dolores continued to travel frequently, visiting Scotland on a yearly basis to visit one daughter and to various countries in Africa and Latin America to visit the other.

Fred was preceded in death in 2008 by his wife of 62 years. He is survived by his daughters Susan MacDonald (Niall) of Scotland and Laurie Hutchings (Alan), currently of Florida, and four grandchildren: Niall Hugh, Catriona and Jamie MacDonald and Zachary Hutchings.

A memorial service will be held on May 26, 2013 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Murray Hill, New Jersey
