Mrs. Thelma Bayne Woods, 99, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2019.

She was born on Christmas day December 25, 1919 in Bryansville, PA the only daughter of the Rev. Ellis J. Bayne and Lillie C. Bayne. Her childhood was spent in the central Pennsylvania towns of Craley, Hanover and Lewistown as her father served churches in those locations.

She graduated from Lewistown High School and went on to graduate with a degree in home economics from Albright College in Reading, PA. While in college she fell in love with William F. Woods, a pastor in the Evangelical Church (which eventually merged to become the United Methodist church). Thelma and Bill shared a love affair and best friendship in marriage that endured for 73 years until his death in 2015.

In her early years of marriage, Thelma taught home economics at Mt. Rose Jr-Sr. High School in York, PA and also managed the school cafeteria. As the family grew, she devoted her life to her family and to the various churches where her husband served following the tradition of that time.

Thelma was an accomplished pianist and throughout high school and college accompanied various choirs at the schools and in her churches. She was a talented alto vocalist who anchored church choirs in each church throughout her life. Her talents were also shared as a Sunday school teacher for various age groups, a summer camp counselor and in later years the founder of a series of women’s prayer groups for church members.

Throughtout the years of their marriage, Thelma and Bill served churches located near the Susquehanna River including Dushore and Lopez; Yorkanna; Baltimore, Trinity; Lemoyne, Grace; Red Lion, St. Paul’s and Carlisle, First. They also lived in Lewisburg, PA during the years that Dr. Woods served as District Superintendent of the Susquehanna Conference.

During the summer months over a span of more than 50 years, many weeks were spent at their cottage with family at Central Oak Heights (COH) on a wooded mountaintop along the Susquehanna River. After retirement, Thelma and Bill spent a decade in Sarasota, Florida enjoying the sun and warmth along with visits from family and friends. In later years, they returned to Lewisburg, PA to reside at River Woods Senior Living Community.

Thelma Woods is survived by her three loving children, Ronald (Kathy), of St. Petersburg, FL, Gail (Glenn) Walz of Lancaster, PA and Cary of Laguna Woods, CA whose wife Debbie predeceased Thelma. She is also mourned by six grandchildren; Renee (Jon) Altman of Roselle Park, NJ, Rodney (Karen) of San Clemente, CA, and Justin (Rebecca) of San Diego, CA, David (Kelly) of Rumson, NJ, Mark (Emily) of Elkins Park, PA and Nicole (Sam) Levy of Portland, OR along with eight great-grandchildren.

Within the family, Thelma filled the role of chief operating officer for the entire family while also dedicating her life to supporting her husband in the Christian ministry. She also was a voracious reader, music lover, enjoyed theatre and lent a sympathetic ear to those who confided in her. The familiar and nostalgic sounds from her piano filled our home even into her ninth decade.

A celebration of her life and interment of ashes will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions can be made to Central Oak Heights Endowment Fund, Phyllis Dyer, P.O. Box 75 Winfield, PA 17889.
